Routine Health Care Tips for Newborn Babies

Cute, small and fragile your baby may seem, but looking after a baby is a responsibility which requires a huge amount of patience and time. Constant care and presence may be necessary in case of a newborn at least on the mother’s part. The baby’s health has to be the paramount factor for new parents, and setting up a routine for baby healthcare could really help. Here are a few tips for new parents as to what they should consider when planning the baby care routine:

Newborn clean up routines

Cleaning is one of the essentials of newborn baby care. For cleaning up a newborn baby, sponge bath is a good solution atleast until the umbilical cord has dried up. Since newborns don’t get as dirty, a sponge bath shall be sufficient to keep them clean. The drier the umbilical cord remains, the quicker it falls off.

Feeding

Newborns might need to be fed every two or three hours. Generally, the newborns tend to lose a few percent of their birth weight in the first week but gain it back in the second. As far as the amount of milk is concerned, the baby shall help you know if it’s full. Let us give you a head start here - it is usual for a baby to have 5 to 7 diaper changes and poop twice a day.

Moisturizing

Drying up of the baby’s skin is again normal. To moisturize the baby, essential baby oils or fragrance-free hypoallergenic baby lotions can be brought into use. About 10-15 minutes of massage can help boost growth and development, and help the baby sleep better.

Mother’s diet

It is essential that breastfeeding mothers take to a healthier and more nutritious diet. Avoiding smoking or alcohol, processed food, fast and spicy food shall keep not only the mother but the baby healthy and happy too.

Dressing the baby

While it is important that you dress the baby adequately to protect it from cold, but care also must also be taken not to overdress. Baby-wears must not include anything tight that could leave marks on the baby’s soft skin or interfere with its blood circulation. The clothing must also be washed using mild and anti-microbial cleanser to prevent the baby’s skin from any harm.

Sleep

Newborn babies tend to rest for a longer time or more often. Some baby’s may also require swaddling to help them fall asleep. While undertaking any such activity, the baby must be held gently yet securely, ensuring that proper support is being provided to it. The swaddles must be slow and gentle. Also, don’t let the baby sleep for more than 3 hours at a stretch without waking it up for feeding.

We hope our tips will keep you in good stead when taking care of your newborn!

What is Domiciliary Hospitalization?

At times it happens that a patient requires to be hospitalized because of some disease, illness, or injury; the treatment of which would exceed three days. But owing to a certain set of circumstances, the patient cannot be admitted to a nursing home or hospital for the required treatment. The circumstances that may result in such situations may include:

  • The condition of the patient is such that moving them to a hospital or nursing home is not possible.
  • There is a lack of accommodation at the nursing home or hospital, because of which the patient is refused admission.
  • Some conditions (critical illnesses) are so far drawn out that it is impractical to keep a patient admitted at a hospital for treatment. Such diseases are also referred to as domiciliary diseases.

In such cases, the treatment of the patient is to be carried on whilst they are confined to their homes. So, Domiciliary Hospitalization refers to the treatment that a patient undergoes at home due to assorted reasons. This kind of treatment is opted for, based on the treating doctor’s recommendation and the merits of the case.

Domiciliary Expenses

Even though a patient is not admitted to the hospital, they are still being treated for their disease, illness or injury. Whether they cannot be shifted to the hospital, the hospital lacks accommodation, or they have domiciliary diseases, getting treatment at home too will cost them money. What people at most times fail to realize is that even domiciliary hospitalization charges are covered under most medical insurance policies. This benefit is so rarely used in making claims because most people are not even aware of its inclusion.

The insurance companies mostly require a number of conditions that need to be met before domiciliary expense claims are approved. For example, a claim for domiciliary expenses will mean that the insured will not get post-hospitalization expenses. These charges also exclude treatments pertaining to certain ailments like asthma, common cold, fever, etc. for obvious reasons. Mostly, domiciliary expenses also have sub-limits imposed on them, depending on the medical insurance.

Attendants

Some treatments that are done as domiciliary hospitalization also require the presence of a nurse or attendant to help the doctor keep an eye on the progress of the patient. Mostly, the charges for the attendant are also covered under the patient’s medical insurance, but it falls to the doctor to legitimize the merits of the claim and requirement.

Lastly, the non-availability of beds at a hospital and the patient’s condition being too severe to warrant displacement to a hospital are rather rare occurrences; hence, domiciliary treatment is mostly undertaken for people with such domiciliary diseases that require treatment for an extended period.

Senior Home Care and Elder Care Services – How to Care for the Elderly

Growing old is not something that everyone accepts with glee. Old age comes with a lot of additional responsibilities and worries. Something that everyone needs to think about is that their parents will age and they will require a lot of care. Despite wanting to believe that things will not change, they will. It is best to discuss everything about senior care at an earlier age, rather than waiting to be pushed suddenly into the driving seat. Here are some points that you should know about caring for the elderly, so that you can be better prepared.

Consider professionals

Take into account your lifestyle, your job, your free time, etc. and discuss with your parents or elders if they would be ok with hiring professionals from elder care services. Such actions do not mean that you love your parents any less, but it’s ok to accept that you might need some help.

Keep up with the tech

There are a lot of technological advancements that are available in the market today. There are panic buttons, sensors, alarms, etc. that can be installed and can actually help you take care of the elderly, without invading their privacy. Keep up with the advances that keep showing up.

Anticipate the expenses

Senior care will lead to a definite increase in expenses. To avoid any resentment or frustration that might result from this, make sure you do some financial planning beforehand. Savings, retirement plans, and everything else that can help you financially, should be considered.

Keep them active

Old bones tire faster, so it will be up to you to make sure that your elders remain as active as possible. Even a daily walk can make a lot of difference to their health.

Track the medication

Call it old age, irresponsibility, or just a weak memory, mismanagement of medication is a big problem. Make sure that you also know all there is to know about the medication that is being prescribed, the side effects to look out for, and whether your parents are taking their meds on time.

Driving

Keep an eye on when your parents drive. A dip in driving skills is inevitable with old age. It will cause a little resentment when you ask your parents to hang up their keys, but don’t shy away from it. Take their doctor’s assistance if you must.

Keep them involved

They have completed all their responsibilities, but you cannot let them withdraw from society. Keep them involved, get them into groups, and make sure that they remain active socially.

Old age will come for us all, but when we are the caregivers, we need to be all the more careful with our responsibilities. There is no shame in accepting that you would need some help, because if a parent becomes an invalid, the emotional trauma may be too much for us. Hiring elder care services can help you with a lot of your tasks.
